Marsh joins SEC, Sam Curran returns to SA20 with DSG as franchises finalise pre-auction squads
The fifth season of the SA20 is set to feature several T20 cricketers, including Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Jason Holder, and Phil Salt. Franchises have confirmed their pre-auction retentions and signings in anticipation of the new edition.
Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have completed their 19-player squads before the auction, leaving 19 slots available across the other four teams.
Key Player Movements
Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s T20 captain, is expected to make his SA20 debut for the three-time champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Marsh will join players such as Quinton de Kock, Matthew Breetzke, Jordan Hermann, and captain Tristan Stubbs in the batting lineup at St George’s Park.
Sam Curran, who previously represented MI Cape Town in the first two seasons, will now play for Durban’s Super Giants, where he will team up with his England teammate Jos Buttler.
Joe Root, England’s returning Test captain, is set to return to Boland Park for another season with the Paarl Royals. Root had previously formed an opening partnership with Lhuan-dre Pretorius for the team.
The runners-up from the previous season, Pretoria Capitals, have strengthened their top order with the additions of Phil Salt and Australian international Matt Short. Salt, a former player for the Capitals, will reunite with Short, as they currently open together for Welsh Fire in The Hundred. This duo is expected to add power to a batting lineup that includes Dewald Brevis, Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, and Connor Esterhuizen.
England all-rounder Will Jacks, who played for the Capitals for three seasons, has moved to MI Cape Town. This move completes the trio of MI franchises for Jacks, who has also played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and is currently with the MI London setup in The Hundred.
Squad Finalisation and Upcoming Auction
Jason Holder, an MLC-winning captain, will join the Joburg Super Kings. The Super Kings are seeking a new captain following the departure of Faf du Plessis, who led the side for its first four seasons.
Among other notable releases, England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who previously formed an opening partnership with Quinton de Kock for the Sunrisers, will enter the auction pool. MI Cape Town has also released Trent Boult, Rassie van der Dussen, and Kieron Pollard. Additionally, Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger, who were marquee signings for the Super Kings, will also be part of the auction.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith commented on the league’s growing appeal, noting that attracting players of the calibre of Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, and Phil Salt demonstrates its global standing. He also highlighted the stability and consistency built within the league, with most squads largely finalised before the auction.
The Super Kings and MI Cape Town are expected to be active at the auction, needing to sign seven and six players, respectively. The Capitals have five vacant slots to fill. All six teams have filled their overseas pre-signing slots, and the Super Kings will be eligible for a wildcard pick.
The fifth season of the SA20 is scheduled to begin on Sunday, January 17, at St George’s Park, with the Sunrisers facing the Capitals in a rematch of last season’s final. The competition will conclude with the Final at Newlands on Sunday, February 21.
