Contract negotiations for Vinicius Junior
Real Madrid has reportedly submitted an improved contract offer to Vinicius Junior. The Brazil international’s current agreement with the Spanish club is set to conclude at the end of the upcoming season. Discussions between the player’s representatives and Real Madrid’s general director Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat took place recently in the Spanish capital.
Previously, there were notable financial discrepancies between the two sides. Reports indicated that Vinicius Junior was seeking an annual package around €30 million, which included a base salary, performance-based add-ons, and a renewal bonus. The renewal bonus was identified as a key point of contention in the negotiations.
Sources familiar with the recent discussions suggest that Real Madrid has now increased their offer. This revised proposal reportedly reflects Vinicius Junior’s importance to the club and its future plans. The player now faces a decision on whether to extend his contract, consider free agency next summer, or explore an opportunity with Arsenal.
Arsenal’s ownership had reportedly approved a potential move for the 26-year-old, who is considered a top target for the reigning Premier League champions to strengthen their forward line. Arsenal were runners-up in last season’s Champions League and reached the semi-finals two editions prior.

Vinicius Junior’s performance and club context
Vinicius Junior returned to Real Madrid’s pre-season training earlier this week. He recently scored four goals in five appearances at this summer’s World Cup while playing for Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil side. The 2025-26 campaign marked Vinicius Junior’s eighth season with Real Madrid, having joined the club from Brazilian side Flamengo in July 2018.
During the 2025-26 season, he registered 22 goals across all competitions for Real Madrid. The club finished second in La Liga, eight points behind Barcelona, marking a second consecutive season without a major trophy. Vinicius Junior has made a total of 375 appearances for Madrid, contributing 128 goals and 100 assists. He has been part of the squad that secured three La Liga titles and won the Champions League twice. He also finished second in the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, behind Rodri.
Real Madrid has had an active summer, with Jose Mourinho returning as head coach. The club has moved to strengthen its squad by adding Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espi. They have also reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for winger Yan Diomande and are reportedly pursuing Manchester City midfielder Rodri.

Player’s perspective and Mourinho’s return
A contract renewal has generally been viewed as the most logical outcome, given that both Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior have prioritised continuing their association. However, there have been periods of significant distance in negotiations, with months passing without progress. Talks initially began in January 2025.
For Real Madrid, retaining Vinicius Junior would be a significant achievement, keeping one of the world’s prominent players and a major commercial asset. The financial and reputational implications of losing him, either below market value this year or for free next summer, are considerable. A renewal would also prevent a direct European rival like Arsenal from strengthening their squad with him.
Vinicius Junior recently commented on his experience under the new manager. “It has gone very well, getting to know the new coach and the new players, and training very hard,” he stated to Real Madrid TV. He added, “Mourinho wants me to be as I have always been: happy, cheerful and playing my football.”
Despite previous comments made by the 63-year-old Mourinho about Vinicius Junior earlier this season, sources close to the player later indicated that the Brazilian had no issues with Mourinho becoming the club’s new manager. Vinicius Junior also emphasised the importance of physical preparation for the upcoming season to minimise injuries, stating, “We have to prepare physically so that during the season we have fewer injuries and can count on everyone.”
