Trent Rockets’ Dominant Performance

The Trent Rockets women’s team has all but secured its place in the latter stages of The Hundred competition, following a significant victory over Birmingham Phoenix. This win, their fourth consecutive, propelled them to the top of the women’s table. The match took place at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Sophia Dunkley played a pivotal role in the Rockets’ success, delivering her third consecutive fifty. She scored 65 runs off 37 balls, further extending her lead at the top of the run-scoring charts. Her performance was crucial as the Rockets successfully chased down a target of 123 runs with 16 balls to spare.

Despite losing key players Nat Sciver-Brunt for 24 runs and Ash Gardner in quick succession, the home side maintained their momentum. Lauren Filer dismissed Gardner, while Kim Garth was instrumental with the ball, taking 4 wickets for 23 runs. Garth’s efforts included dismissing Davina Perrin, who had started energetically for Phoenix with 18 runs off 13 balls.

Birmingham Phoenix’s Struggle

For Birmingham Phoenix, the match proved to be a challenging one, marking their third defeat in five games. This result significantly diminishes their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages. The team had a difficult start, with Davina Perrin‘s early energy not translating into a substantial score.

Alice Capsey‘s challenging tournament continued as she was clean-bowled by Charley Phillips for just one run. Ellyse Perry also departed for the same score, falling to a combined effort from her Australian teammates Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney. The Phoenix found themselves in a precarious position when Tammy Beaumont was run out for 24 runs off 21 balls by a sharp throw from Dunkley, leaving them at four wickets down for 55 runs.

Contributions from Emma Lamb, who scored 45 runs off 34 balls, and Annerie Dercksen, with 21 runs off 16 balls, helped Phoenix reach a competitive total. However, with Dunkley’s form, 122 runs ultimately proved insufficient to challenge the Rockets.

Other Matches and Qualification Scenarios

In another fixture, Welsh Fire boosted their qualification chances with a three-wicket victory over Manchester Super Giants. This win was largely attributed to an inspired bowling performance that restricted the Super Giants to 85 runs for 9 wickets. Orla Prendergast, an Irish player replacing Sophie Devine, was the standout bowler for Fire, achieving the best figures in the women’s competition this year with 4 wickets for 18 runs.

Despite the low target, Fire faced some difficulties in their chase, losing seven wickets before securing the win with nine balls to spare. England spinner Sophie Ecclestone‘s figures of 3 wickets for 14 runs were not enough to turn the tide for Manchester. This result moved Welsh Fire to 12 points, placing them one spot and two points behind their opponents in the table, with two games remaining.

Both Southern Brave and Trent Rockets are now almost guaranteed the top two spots in the table, ensuring their progression to the knockout stages. This leaves only one remaining spot in the women’s eliminator up for grabs. The Rockets are currently searching for their maiden title, having not won a championship in the first five seasons of the tournament. Their improved display in the ongoing Hundred Women’s 2026 season has positioned them well for the next round, having accumulated 16 points.

Following Wednesday’s four games, Thursday’s schedule for The Hundred includes a double-header. The women’s team of London Spirit will host MI London from 3 PM, followed by the men’s teams squaring off from 6:30 PM. All matches of The Hundred, leading up to the finals on Sunday, August 16, are available for live viewing.
