Bruno Guimaraes joins Arsenal from Newcastle
Arsenal has completed the signing of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United for £75m. The Brazil midfielder, who is 28 years old, has agreed to a four-year deal with an option for an additional 12 months. Guimarães described the transfer as one of the most challenging decisions of his life, noting his strong connection to Newcastle.
Guimarães expressed his readiness for a new chapter, stating, "This move is very tough because Newcastle means so much to me. But I wanted to experience something new in my life. I feel ready for a new challenge for myself and my family." He also mentioned his desire to win trophies and make history, believing Arsenal is the right place to achieve these goals.
A New Challenge at Emirates Stadium
The midfielder departed Newcastle’s training camp in La Manga, Spain, to finalise his move to Emirates Stadium after discussions progressed. He reportedly received messages from future teammates, including his countryman Gabriel and fellow midfielder Declan Rice. Rice, recalling their past encounters, told Guimarães, "come here and please no more fights, now we’re friends."
Guimarães joined Newcastle in January 2022 when the team was facing relegation challenges. He played a significant role in the club’s improved performance under former head coach Eddie Howe. During his time at Newcastle, he was part of the squad that secured qualification for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025. Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season.

Midfield Dynamics and Set-Piece Prowess
The transfer of Guimarães marks the most expensive move for a midfielder aged at least 28. This highlights Arsenal’s high regard for the player, despite his age approaching 30 by the end of next year. One factor contributing to this valuation is Guimarães’s consistent availability, as he rarely misses matches. Additionally, he can operate effectively across the midfield in the 4-3-3 formation often used by Mikel Arteta. These qualities could be valuable, especially with Declan Rice managing long-term nerve pain and Martin Ødegaard playing a limited percentage of possible Premier League minutes last season.
Guimarães is known for his ability to disrupt opposition attacks. Data indicates that Arsenal misplaced a substantial number of passes in the final third last season, creating potential counter-attack opportunities for opponents. Guimarães’s willingness to commit fouls when necessary is also a notable aspect of his play; he was penalised for 45 fouls in the league last season, a figure he maintained across all four of his full campaigns with Newcastle. Only Moisés Caicedo matched this level in each of the previous four Premier League seasons.
Despite committing a high number of fouls, Guimarães has received fewer yellow cards than nine other players since his debut for Newcastle in February 2022, suggesting officials may view his indiscretions more leniently. He also excels at drawing fouls, having suffered 410 fouls in the Premier League, which is more than 100 greater than any other player during his tenure in England. This ability to win free-kicks has been a consistent feature of his play, as he ranked no lower than second in the Premier League for fouls suffered in each of the previous four seasons, twice leading the standings across England, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.
This skill set is particularly appealing for a team like Arsenal, which capitalises on set plays. Only two players have scored more set-piece goals than Guimarães in the Premier League since early 2022, and Arsenal already has one of them, his fellow Brazilian Gabriel. Guimarães’s departure is a significant loss for Newcastle, following Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, who were also key players and among Newcastle’s top four for free-kicks won last season.
