Romero’s potential departure from Tottenham

Cristian Romero, a defender for Tottenham, is reportedly open to a move to Arsenal this summer. However, Tottenham remains firm that their player will not transfer to their north London rivals. Despite this stance, other prominent European clubs are also showing interest in the Argentina international.

Atletico Madrid has engaged in discussions regarding a potential transfer for Romero, who also serves as Tottenham’s captain. The Argentina international, who signed a new four-year deal with Spurs last August, is anticipated to depart the club during the current summer transfer window. Inter Milan has also expressed interest in acquiring the 28-year-old defender.

Romero is a long-standing target for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone. The Spanish club is reportedly intensifying its efforts to sign the centre-back after a previous attempt was unsuccessful due to Tottenham’s financial demands. Spurs are aware of Atletico’s interest, and an agreement on personal terms with the player is not expected to be an issue.

Recent reports indicate progress in discussions, particularly in Atletico’s contact with Romero. The Spanish club reportedly initiated direct talks with Tottenham after reaching an initial understanding regarding personal terms with the player. Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi recently stated he would respect the wishes of players who desire to leave the club.

Barcelona’s renewed interest and competition

Barcelona’s interest in Romero has resurfaced following the departure of Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo to Liverpool. This move compelled the Catalan club to adjust their transfer plans rapidly. Barcelona and Liverpool reached a verbal agreement for a season-long loan for Araujo, with an option for a permanent purchase by the English side. This unexpected development led Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, to reassess defensive options, placing Romero at the top of their list.

According to a Spanish newspaper, Barcelona has long admired Romero’s qualities, including his physical strength, leadership, and ability to defend high up the pitch under pressure. The Argentine defender was already on Barcelona’s shortlist, but discussions had not progressed beyond the initial candidacy stage until Araujo’s exit. Romero appears receptive to leaving Tottenham, and the English club has indicated a willingness to consider offers for his services.

Barcelona’s strong entry into the pursuit of Romero could significantly alter the transfer landscape, especially given that Atletico Madrid had appeared close to securing the deal. The Catalan club believes Romero would bring elite experience, a leadership personality, and a robust playing style, making him a suitable partner for young talents in their defensive line, such as Pau Cubarsi.

Financial considerations remain a primary hurdle for Barcelona, which previously favoured a loan arrangement over a costly permanent transfer. The club continues to explore other defensive targets, including Spanish defender Aymeric Laporte, who returned to Athletic Bilbao last summer from Al-Nassr and has a contract until 2028.

Despite Deco’s desire to explore the market, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has shown hesitation regarding the immediate need for a new defender, preferring to trust existing squad options like Cubarsi, Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martin, and Alvaro Cortes. However, Araujo’s departure, which frees up salary space as Liverpool covers his wages, has brought Romero’s name back to the forefront of Barcelona’s transfer considerations.

Romero missed the end of last season with a knee injury, and Spurs finished 17th in the league, with the defender receiving two red cards during the season.

Meanwhile, Everton and Crystal Palace are discussing a potential swap deal involving Dwight McNeil and Brennan Johnson. Barcelona is also confident in reaching an agreement with Manchester City for Rodri, valued at £68m, and is preparing a revised bid.

In Scottish football, Rangers have submitted an improved offer for PSV Eindhoven winger Couhaib Driouech.
